Worldwide e-commerce revenue has been mainly contributed by PC e-commerce; however, with increased availability of mobile devices and the change in consumer habits, mobile commerce is expected to see constant growth. According to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a Taipei-based ICT research institute, many Taiwanese and foreign e-commerce operators have started to deploy mobile commerce such as app development and mobile website optimization to enhance sales performance and service efficiency via mobile technologies.
US e-commerce giant Amazon, online home furnishings retailer Wayfair, and online handmade sales platform Etsy posted over 100% year-on-year growth in mobile commerce in 2014 (including smartphones and tablets). Other B2C e-commerce operators reaching the same excellent performance include German online fashion retailer Zalando, Chinese e-commerce operators Yixun.com, MMB, and JD.

"The worldwide e-commerce industry and market has undergone rapid changes in recent years. The e-commerce market in Asia Pacific will continue to develop rapidly at a higher speed than the global average and is likely to overtake the United States as world's biggest e-commerce market. Many e-commerce operators have aggressively made forays into other markets, developed mobile services, and integrated their online and offline resources," says Rosa Chang, industry analyst with MIC.
In the face of rapid development, retailers must concentrate on their current business while keeping an eye on the change in global trends such as the emergence of new service models or markets. By pursuing steady growth and constant innovation, retailers will be able to respond to changes immediately.
